Ayaan Hirsi Ali has written a very good explanation of Huntington’s Clash of Civilizations as it applies to the modern world. She rightly explains that:
Our civilization is not indestructible: It needs to be actively defended. This was perhaps Huntington’s most important insight. The first step towards winning this clash of civilizations is to understand how the other side is waging it—and to rid ourselves of the One World illusion.

“Our civilization is not indestructible: It needs to be actively defended”
I agree but lot’s of luck getting that to happen.
The very evening of 9/11 Canadian newscasters were openly stating how the U.S. was getting it’s “comeuppance”.
Then there were the “truthers” and the T-shirts for sale in New York saying “I (heart) NY – without the WTC”.
There are other examples. (Far too many to list in a comment – or even a research paper).
The bottom line is our people are too fat, lazy, comfortable, decadent and complacent to defend anything.
This is nothing new. It’s being going on for half a century now and growing every year.
It’s going to be very interesting what our society looks like in 20 years time.

It can also be hard to tell who the enemy IS. When we hear CSIS tell us there are Hezbollah sleeper cells in Canada, see Members of Parliament marching in support of Hezbollah, and other parliamentarians, even Party Leaders don’t see anything untoward about this, it is hard to tell who is complacent or complicit.
