Cambridge Energy Research Associates has published a study that shows that the lifecycle CO2 emissions from oil sands is only marginally higher that other oil sources:
This pretty much refutes the statements made by some environmentalists (and the US administration) regarding oil sands being worse for the climate…

Their big bitch was “GHG” emmisions… well duh… H2O is part of the criteria defining GHG’s… so yes, using steam and presure to get the oil out of sand is likely going to let some H2O into the atmosphere…but then so does Niagra Falls…are they going to close it down or reshunt the water to cut back on all that added water vapor???

It won’t make any difference. When they can inflate the effect of a difference between .035% CO2 and .04% CO2 into the perceived crisis as they have, a ‘marginal’ difference such as shown in the graph above obviously proves the end of the world is nigh.
